Criticism doesn’t work

The way we talk to ourselves can make a huge difference in our lives and relationships and also how we pursue our goals and dreams.

The journey towards what we want can be much lighter and more joyful if we can tame those overly critical voices that keep us with the feeling that we are never enough.

According to the dictionary:

  • Criticism is the expression of disapproval of someone or something based on perceived faults or mistakes;
  • Criticism is the analysis and judgment of the merits and faults of a literary or artistic work.

We may believe that it is the criticism is that help helps us to become better, or it is what prevents us from making mistakes. And, if that is what you believe, I will challenge it now.

This way of thinking is probably hurting you and your loved ones!

It is not the criticism that makes you better or prevents you from making mistakes. What makes you better is your effort, persistence and openness to learning from observation and errors.

Mistakes and “failures” are your learning opportunities. Without mistakes, we don’t learn; we don’t improve. Without openness to learn and without persistence, we don’t achieve anything.

What helps us is not the criticism. Instead, it is our persistence.

It is our effort to push through a learning curve. It is the openness to learn from past mistakes. It is the curiosity and desire to discover how we can do better.

It does not matter how well someone may deliver the most constructive criticism. If we are not persistent and open to exploring new possibilities, criticism will do nothing.

On the contrary, criticism, or this exaggerated focus on what is wrong or missing, can keep us stuck and afraid of taking new chances!

It is not the criticism that takes you anywhere; it is your effort and persistence!

Shift the focus from what is wrong or missing, look into what is working well and the lessons you can take from the mistakes – and keep going! You rock! 😉
